7.25 The Holy Spirit finds expression through our vocal cords
Meanwhile, I would like to show you from the Bible that even evil spirits from the spiritual realm find expression through people. They express themselves through the vocal cords of the people whom they possess. For example, the man with an unclean spirit from the region of Gadarenes spoke to Jesus (Mark 5:7). Another example would be the woman with a spirit of divination who followed Paul and kept crying out over them (Acts 16:17).
The difference is that an evil spirit controls a person, while the Holy Spirit empowers a person who exercises his free will. The evil spirit harms a person while the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ who brings life to a person. But the fact is that expression of the spirit realm is made through our vocal cords.
In the Old Testament, the people did not have the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It was a New Covenant experience that was given when the Holy Spirit could indwell man. This was after Jesus had cut the New Covenant on the cross.
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit did anoint people from the outside, but never from within. Let me show you what happened when the Holy Spirit came upon people in the Old Testament. The people prophesied. It was an utterance through their vocal cords.
Let me give you two examples. The first is when the anointing came upon the seventy elders during the time of Moses.
(Numbers 11:25)
Then the Lord came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders; and it happened, when the Spirit rested upon them, that THEY PROPHESIED…
The second example is when the Spirit of God came upon Saul.
(1 Samuel 10:9-10)
When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and HE PROPHESIED among them.
We have shown beyond doubt that the Holy Spirit expresses Himself through our vocal cords. There is an expression which is unique to the New Covenant. The Old Testament believers never had the privilege. Today, you have that privilege because you live in the New Covenant which Christ purchased. What is this special expression? How did the Holy Spirit express himself through the 120 disciples on the day of Pentecost? We will find out tomorrow.
