10.8 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors

In the Lord’s Prayer, they were to pray for the forgiveness of their sins as they forgave others. Jesus said that the forgiveness of our sins is subject to us forgiving our debtors, as elaborated in verses 14 to 15.

(Matt 6:14-15)
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Think about this. If there is any unforgiveness in their hearts, it would hinder them from receiving forgiveness. That would be terrible as there are many people who wants to release forgiveness to others, yet they do not have the ability to do so. Some people struggle with unforgiveness for a life time.

But something happened on the cross. Jesus died for the forgiveness of mankind. The river of God’s forgiveness flowed freely from the cross. All our sins, past present and future were dealt with. Heb 10:12 days that Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins forever.

Today, we are to receive His unconditional forgiveness and love. His forgiveness is no longer subject to you forgiving others. In fact, when you have received His unconditional forgiveness, you will have the power to forgive others. Therefore in the Epistles, the exhortation to us is to forgive one another EVEN AS GOD IN CHRIST FORGAVE YOU. It is in the past tense. Forgiveness was settled 2,000 years ago.

(Eph 4:32)
And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ FORGAVE YOU.

Do you see the change in the cause and effect relationship? In fact today, because Christ forgave us, so we must do also to others.

(Col 3:12-13)
Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; EVEN AS CHRIST FORGAVE YOU, SO YOU MUST DO ALSO.

Today, we no longer need to struggle to forgive others. The power in releasing forgiveness comes by the revelation of how much Christ has forgiven you. If you are still struggling, then stop. Start to meditate of His forgiveness for you. Start to receive His unconditional forgiveness and love.
