10.2 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name

The Lord’s Prayer opens with worship to the Father, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.”

In the Old Testament, God was not revealed as Father. He was revealed as lawgiver and judge on Mt Sinai. Israel fear God and kept a distance. When Jesus came to this earth, He addressed God as Father. He taught His disciples to address God as Father. Of all the titles of God, Jesus came to reveal God as Father.

In the book of Romans, Paul talks about the Spirit of sonship upon us, that we may call God “Abba Father” or “Daddy God”. There is a sense of intimacy with our Father.

(Romans 8:15)
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

The next point in the Lord’s Prayer is that God dwells in heaven. There is still a sense of distance. God’s presence was in heaven and we talk to Him as our Father in heaven. That was only bridged on the Day of Pentecost when the Spirit of God was poured down to indwell man. Think about it, God Himself indwelling man! Who would dare think of it? But the Lord Jesus already alluded to it in the book of John.

(John 3:23-24)
But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus said that the day would come when we didn’t have to go up the mountain or to the temple to worship God. We could worship God wherever we are. This is because God would indwell us. We could worship Him in Spirit and in truth with a new prayer language of tongues. As Paul said, “I will worship with the Spirit, I will worship with the understanding.”

We don’t have to go anywhere to contact God’s presence because WE ARE the TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. There is no sense of distance. We don’t lookup to heaven. We look to Christ in us, the hope of glory.

(1 Cor 3:16)
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

God lives in you, and you can worship Him anywhere, anytime. The Holy Spirit will cause worship to rise in a new language. This came on the Day of Pentecost.
