9.80 What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?
Under the Old Covenant, it was clear that the works of God was to keep the law perfectly. But Romans 3:20 tells us that no one attained to it.
(Romans 3:19-20)
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
When the rich young ruler came to Jesus, he was concerned about what he has “TO DO” to have eternal life. He approached Jesus on the basis of his performance. Jesus gave him the law, and he walked away sad because he could not attain to it.
(Matthew 19:16)
16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
To those who approach God on the basis of works for eternal life, they will fail. So let us define what we shall do, that we may work the works of God. The Pharisees once asked Jesus this same question. Jesus’ answer will tell us the work that God requires from us.
(John 6:28-29)
28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Jesus gave an astonishing answer. Jesus said that the work of God is simply to believe in Him whom God sent. Can you see how this begins to tie back to the “law of faith” in the new covenant?
You see, Jesus came to perform all the works that were required of God. He fulfilled all righteousness by keeping the law. He died for our sins. He paid for our redemption. What is required of us is to believe in Jesus, and what He has accomplished on the cross.
