10.6 Give us this day our daily bread

Jesus asked His disciples to pray for their daily bread. Bread is for their daily feeding and nourishment. When Israel came out of Egypt, God gave them daily manna to feed them. Likewise, today we need daily food and nourishment.

There are two aspects to the fulfillment of our daily bread – both spiritual and natural. Let us start with the spiritual fulfillment. When the Pharisees talked about the physical manna, Jesus contrasted it to true spiritual manna. Jesus said that He is the TRUE BREAD FROM HEAVEN.

(John 6:31-35)
Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat’”
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the TRUE BREAD FROM HEVEN. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
And Jesus said to them, “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Jesus said that He is the BREAD OF LIFE. He who comes to Him shall never hunger. It is not a one time coming to Jesus. In the original Greek, it means he who keeps on coming to Jesus to feed on Him will never hunger. Therefore, Jesus is our true daily bread.

How do we feed on Jesus? The wheat has to be crushed and baked before it becomes bread – ready for consumption. Likewise, Jesus has to be crushed and consumed by the fire of God’s judgment on the cross – so that we can feed on Him, and His finished work.

Our daily bread has been given to us. We can feed on Him every day to receive zoe life. We feed on Jesus through the revelation of God’s Word. Jesus is the Living Word of God.

(Matthew 4:4)
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

Today, when we read the Bible, it is not to feed our intellect. It is not for head knowledge. That does not produce life. We need to feed on Jesus for spiritual growth. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the revelation of His finished work, and what it means to you in the New Covenant. Feed on Jesus your Daily Bread.
