8.111 My spiritual journey of discovering God’s grace (Pt 5)

By the grace of God, He brought me back to the cross of Calvary, where I had started my journey as a child. I was backslidden from Christ because I fell from grace into the system of law.

(Galatians 5:4)
You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

God met me when I was at the end of the road – at the end of my self-effort. There I understood that Christianity was about the grace of Jesus. It was about discovering what Jesus had attained for us, rather than trying so hard to attain it for ourselves.

When I received grace afresh, I fell in love with Jesus all over again. I realized that God loved me just as I am. My standing with God depended on Jesus’ performance instead of my own. He had no punishment for me because Jesus bore them all on the cross. He only had blessings reserved for me in my promised land of grace. The only requirement was simply to believe Him.

I started to depend on the Holy Spirit’s empowerment for my spiritual walk. It was no longer about how hard I tried or how much I did. It was about depending on His power that works through me. I labored more abundantly under grace than under law.

Christianity became a living relationship with God instead of a religion powered by self-effort. It was no longer about dos and don’ts (Col 2:20-23). It was about living with a passion for Him from within. It was about enjoying my sonship with my Heavenly Father.

Having enjoyed the abundant grace of God for a number of years, the Lord then asked me to share this good news – the gospel of grace with others. Many Christians have come out of Egypt but they are not enjoying the land of milk and honey yet. Today, the promised land is the land of the New Covenant promises in Christ. This gospel of grace will bring believers into that land of rest. Little did I know that I was fulfilling God’s prophecy from Rev Des Short - to lead the people into the promised land as Joshua did.

(Hebrews 4:8-10)
For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

With this, we will end this series on contrasting the Old & New Covenants. May you reign in life through the abundance of grace (Romans 5:17).
