8.104 Freed from the marriage to the law to be married to Christ
(Rom 7:4)
Therefore, my brethren, you also have become DEAD TO THE LAW through the body of Christ, that you may be MARRIED TO ANOTHER—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
The law here in its context is specifically the Ten Commandments (Rom 7:7). Today, we can only be married to one person. Since we have been freed from Mr. Law, we are married to Jesus. There is no more relationship between the Christian and the Ten Commandments anymore. Our relationship is with Christ alone. We cannot be married to Christ and have an affair with Mr. Law at the same time.
Beloved, isn’t it great to be married to our Lord Jesus instead of Mr. Law? Our marriage with Jesus is based on faith, love and empowerment. Our previous marriage with Mr. Law was cold, devoid of love and intimacy. In fact, Mr. Law was a highly demanding husband who condemns and punishes his wife when she falls short of his high expectations.
Mr. Law demands, “You have to fulfill all my impossible demands in order to be accepted.” Jesus assures, “I have accepted you, paid your debts and made you righteous. Therefore, you walk righteously by faith.”
Mr. Law demands, “You must love me with your whole life.” Jesus assures, “I have loved you with my whole life. You only need to receive and respond to my love.”
Mr. Law demands, “Do everything on your own – with all your heart, soul and strength. I won’t lift a finger to help you.” Jesus assures, “Rest in me for I have accomplished everything for you. I am always with you to help you.”
Can you see the difference in the relationship? If you live under the law, the law demands from you righteousness, love and self-performance. As spiritual bankrupts, we cannot fulfill the demands of Mr. Law.
Then Jesus comes to deliver is from that marriage through death. We enter into a new marriage with Him, where He supplies His righteousness. He also supplies His unconditional love. And He helps us walk by His empowerment from within. You just can’t help loving this wonderful Jesus passionately.
