8.107 My spiritual journey of discovering God’s grace

For the next few lessons, I would like to share my spiritual journey to help the reader identify with these powerful New Covenant truths about God’s love and grace.

I was born the youngest among four brothers into a Taoist family, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Following my conception, my mother attempted to abort the fetus as she already had trouble coping with three young children. I was not part of the plan. But after her initial attempt, she was filled with regret and changed her mind. I was part of God’s plan. He preserved my life from harm and separated me from my mother’s womb for His divine purpose. I was called and delivered by His grace, long before I knew Him.

As a young child, I witnessed many funeral processions at my housing estate and heard dogs howling through the night. The fear of death gripped my little heart. I asked my grandmother, “What happens when people die? Where do they go?” I thought our elders had all the answers but she did not give me a reply that day.

At the age of 6 or 7, I looked up to heaven one day and talked to the God whom I did not know – “God, if You exist and You hear me now, show Yourself to me and tell me the answers.” The God of heaven heard me and He intervened in my life.

At the age of 9, a tuition mate invited me to his Sunday School. Up till then, I did not know what Christianity was and I had never met a Christian before. Who would have imagined a 10-year-old boy reaching out to a 9-year-old? God had intervened miraculously as an answer to my prayer. But I had to first seek parental consent.

Though my parents were Taoists, they granted me permission to attend Sunday School. My mother was hoping that Sunday School could change my behavior as unlike my brothers, I was the black sheep who constantly got into trouble with the headmaster and teachers in school.

I started attending Sunday School in an Assemblies of God church that occupied a shop-house opposite a football field. During Sunday School, we sang songs about this wonderful Savior who loves the little children. Shortly after, I joined the main service. The people in church were full of love and enthusiasm for God. I saw God through their unconditional love and their passion. As a young child with a sensitive heart, it was the LOVE and the GRACE of God drew me to Him.

During a church service in 1980, at the age of 9, I gave my life to the Lord Jesus and accepted Him into my heart. At that moment, I knew I was a child of God and felt abundant love and joy in my heart. I was no longer afraid of death because I had received eternal life. God had found me, His lost sheep, and I had found the living God I was seeking for.
