7.49 Bearing fruit of the Spirit
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who ABIDES IN ME, and I IN HIM, BEARS MUCH FRUIT; for without Me you can do nothing.
The fruit of the Spirit is the promise for New Covenant believers revealed in the Epistles. This promise was not given in the Old Covenant. This is because the promise is given only to those who abide in Christ.
How do we abide in Christ? When we first received Jesus, our lives were wrapped up in His. We became a new creation IN CHRIST. As we grow as Christians, we believe everything that the Bible says about who we are in Christ. We begin to feed on Jesus, the living Word who came down from heaven.
When we abide in Christ, Jesus will also abide in us. How does He abide in us? He does so through His Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Christ. His lives in us through His Spirit and we become partakers of His divine nature. As we allow His nature to be grow and be revealed in us, these are seen as fruit of the Spirit.
It is like what Jesus said. He is the vine and we are the branches. The branches must first be connected to the vine. Then the vine supplies the life and the nutrients to the branch and the branch is able to grow. When we see ourselves in Him, we experience His life in us.
Christ did not come to make bad people good. He came to make dead people live. Jesus came to transform us as sinners into saints by giving us a new life, identity and nature in Him. Our new man was made according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
(2 Cor 5:17)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW CREATION; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
(Eph 4:24)
…and that you put on the NEW MAN which was created ACCORDING TO GOD, in true RIGHTEOUSNESS and HOLINESS.
We shall journey to discover our new identity and to allow His nature to be manifested in us. A lot of Christians want to bear fruit and they try to bear fruit with little success. The secret to bearing fruit is not in trying to bear fruit. This is a paradigm shift to the traditional thinking. The secret is to abide in the vine and receive the nourishment from the vine. Feed on Jesus. Receive from Him. See yourself in Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to work in us.
