7.41 The benefits of praying in the Spirit – entering the spiritual rest and refreshing
For with STAMMERING LIPS AND ANOTHER TONGUE
He will speak to this people,
To whom He said, “This is the rest with which
You may cause the weary to REST”
And, “This is the REFRESHING”…
What is the rest or refreshing that the Bible is referring to? Speaking in other tongues! In 1 Cor 14:20-21, Paul quotes and uses this passage from Isaiah in the context of praying in tongues.
(1 Corinthians 14:20-22)
Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.
In the law it is written:
“With men of other tongues and other lips
I will speak to this people;
And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,”
says the Lord.
Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers…
Note that tongues can sound like stammering lips. It could also be a fluent language, or it may sound like groaning in the spirit. But it is common for people who receive the baptism in the Spirit to start off with tongues that sound like stammering. But we do not despise the simple things of God for they are powerful.
Tongues flows from the finished work on the cross. It was given as a result of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost because the work of redemption was finished. It is the prayer language for the new dispensation of grace.
When we pray in tongues, we are resting in the grace of God and the finished work of Jesus. We are resting in the position of victory as we depend on the power of the Holy Spirit to effect change. As we rest in prayer, God starts to work. The New Covenant is about entering the rest of God (Hebrews 4:11).
Praying in tongues causes our spirits to be rested and refreshed. There are testimonies of people who experience rest and refreshing in their souls and physical bodies as well. There are testimonies of wonderful miracles that happen when people start to pray in tongues. When we enter that realm of rest through praying in tongues, we also allow the Spirit to empower us and to work on our behalf.
