7.39 The benefits of praying in the Spirit – receiving wisdom and revelation from God

When we speak in tongues, we speak mysteries.

(1 Cor 14:2)
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Cor 2:9-16 says that the Holy Spirit knows the deep things of God; the things that God has prepared for us who love Him.

The Holy Spirit is able to let us know these secrets. These secrets are spoken “not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

When we pray a lot in tongues, the revelations of God will be transmitted to our understanding as an overflow. When we receive the wisdom and the revelations of God, our understanding grows.

The passage ends by declaring, “But we have the mind of Christ.” The most anointed Bible teachers and ministers I have known share the same secret – they received great revelations from the Holy Spirit through praying a lot in tongues.

A leading teacher of the Word said that he would spend time in God’s presence by praying in tongues. Often he would receive fresh revelations from the Lord. He would then check out those revelations in the Bible – and to his amazement, the verses were all there. He would then use the Word to bring forth those revelations in teaching.

As a principle, we should start by praying and worshipping in the spirit, which is then followed by praying and worshipping with the understanding (1 Cor 14:15). This is the divine order for receiving wisdom and revelation from God and interpreting them.

(1 Cor 14:14-15)
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will PRAY WITH THE SPIRIT, and I will also PRAY WITH THE UNDERSTANDING. I will SING WITH THE SPIRIT, and I will also SING WITH THE UNDERSTANDING.

When you pray in the spirit, the Holy Spirit would put His thoughts in your mind and you can pray them forth. When you worship in the spirit, you will receive a new song in your heart and you can sing it out. You will be amazed at the wisdom and revelation that flows from the Holy Spirit.
