9.39 Experiencing the true substance of Christ – the Ark of the Covenant
The Holy of Holies is God’s presence and the Mercy Seat is His throne. Today the believer is “in Christ”. The Bible tells us that we are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Therefore, we can already experience our true position in Christ, while on earth. We can enter the presence of God by a new and living way. The veil has been torn when Christ was crucified.
The Ten Commandments point to the sins of Israel. The rod of Aaron speaks of Israel’s rebellion against God’s leadership in Aaron. The pot of manna speaks of Israel’s rejection of God’s provisions. All three items speaks of man’s sin and rebellion.
Therefore, the Ark had to be covered by the Mercy Seat. And blood had to be sprinkled on the Mercy Seat every year. The Mercy Seat points to Jesus who is our mercy seat. The blood of animals points to the blood of Jesus. When God sees the blood, it reminds Him that the wages of sin has been paid. Justice has been satisfied.
Today, the Mercy Seat is called the Throne of Grace. Under the Old Testament, they did not receive the punishment that they deserved because of mercy. The blood of bulls and goats covered their sins.
Under the New Covenant, grace came through Jesus. We get to receive the blessings that we did not deserve. This is because the blood of Jesus made us righteous. Hebrews says that we can come boldly to the throne of grace to receive both mercy and grace.
(Hebrews 4:16)
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Today, the Mercy Seat is our experience of Jesus, the Lamb upon the throne. We are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. We get to experience not just priesthood (the Altar of Incense) but Jesus has made us kings as well. This furniture tells us about the believer’s position and authority.
The true Holy of Holies is God’s throne room in heaven. Jesus has gone ahead of us as the first-fruit. The final fulfillment in the Church is when we are raptured into the presence of God.
