9.35 Experiencing the true substance of Christ – the Brazen Laver
The Brazen Laver is a furniture that contains water. A priest would wash his body at the Brazen Laver when he is instituted as a priest. This happens only once in a lifetime. Thereafter, when the priest serves in the tabernacle and his hands get dirty, he washes his hands and feet at the Brazen Laver.
The Brazen Laver speaks of Jesus our sanctification. Bronze speaks of judgment. On the cross, Jesus not only took our sins, but He also gave us the gift of righteousness. He not only took away our debt, but He gave us an inheritance. He not only took our shame, He gave us a new identity. On the cross, He bore the judgment – He became sin that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ.
(2 Cor 5:21)
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Today, sanctification does not come through what we do. It does not come through our actions. It comes through a person – Jesus. Righteousness is a gift. Jesus has become our sanctification.
(1 Cor 1:30)
But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and RIGHTEOUSNESS and SANCTIFICATION and redemption…
Just as a priest only washes his body once, we were washed thoroughly when we first became a priest and a child of God. We were washed by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5-7). Water is the symbol of the Holy Spirit. Because our righteousness is in Christ, it cannot be taken away.
But in the process of serving God, or through our daily lives, our conscience and actions may be polluted. That is why it is important for us to be washed by the Word of God – which reminds us of our righteousness in Christ. The Word of God lifts us up, and reminds us of who we are – so that we can continue walking in righteousness. Water is also a symbol of the Word. Eph 5:26 says that Jesus washes us with the Word.
This is the experience of the New Covenant believer in Christ. We received the gift of righteousness, and were sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Thereafter, we have to allow the Word to renew our minds to our new identity in Christ.
