9.27 Jesus a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek
(Hebrews 6:19-7:3)
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become HIGH PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK. For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is our High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. He is not under the Aaronic priesthood of the law – which is imperfect. He is of a higher order. There is no comparison.
When Abraham returned from war, he was blessed by Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the most High God. Melchizedek is the pre-incarnate Christ. He is known as the king of righteousness – just as Jesus came to establish the righteousness of God through faith. He is also known as the king of Peace, just as Jesus came to establish peace with God through the cross.
Melchizedek was without genealogy, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. He is unlike the imperfect priest who passes on, whose work is never done. But he is our perfect priest, who lives forever.
Today, He is seated at the right hand of the father. His nail pierced hands are a reminder of the perfect work of Calvary. He is the guarantor of our peace and our righteousness. We have access to the Father through our perfect High Priest, Jesus. We can enter the presence of God in a new and living way. We are privileged.
