9.23 Seeing Jesus in the Epistles
Without the Epistles, we would not know what Christianity is about. We would not know what Christ had accomplished on the cross. The Epistles contain the highest revelation of Christ. For example, Eph 2:6 says that we are seated in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. You can’t find this kind of revelation anywhere in the Old Testament and the Gospels. It would even sound heretical to the religious leaders of the time.
When Jesus was on this earth, there were many things He couldn’t tell His disciples. They were not ready for these truths. But when the Teacher – the Holy Spirit had come, He would lead them into all truth. So the Holy Spirit used the apostles to share some of these awesome revelations in the Epistles.
The book of Hebrews was written to the Jews. So it makes reference to everything they knew under the Old Testament. It uses that background knowledge to unveil Christ. Since this is the approach we have been using too, we will walk through the book of Hebrews to highlight some of these revelations. This book elevates Christ above all else.
Firstly, the book begins by telling us that while God spoke to the fathers through prophets, He has now spoken directly through His own Son. God spoke through His Son while He was on this earth. Jesus is still speaking from heaven through the book of Hebrews (Heb 12:25). Though Israel revered the prophets of old, God’s Son is greater than all the prophets. They were to heed His voice. Today, we have the privilege of listening to God’s very own Son.
(Hebrews 1:1-3)
God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the PROPHETS, has in these last days spoken to us BY HIS SON, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power…
There is no comparison at all for Jesus is greater. Jesus is the heir of all things. God made the worlds through Jesus. Jesus is the brightness of the Father’s glory, and the express image of His person. Jesus upholds everything by the word of His power. We are to listen to Him, as He is unveiled through the book of Hebrews.
