9.19 Jesus unveils Himself using Old Testament scriptures
In fact, when Jesus died on the cross, all the disciples were disheartened. They had forgotten what Jesus had told them – that He had to die, and be resurrected on the third day. As a result, they were devastated.
After Jesus’ resurrection, two of the disciples were on their way to Emmaus. They were having a conversation among themselves when Jesus joined them. They did not recognize Jesus, so they to shared about their sadness over Jesus’ death.
Jesus said that they were slow of heart to believe the Bible. Then Jesus EXPOUNDED to them from the Old Testament Scriptures (the books of the law & the prophetic books) the things concerning Himself.
(Luke 24:25-27)
Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” And beginning at MOSES and all the PROPHETS, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
It was a long journey; so Jesus must have shared for hours. A few interesting points to note:
1) Jesus shared from the Old Testament. Most people would read the Old Testament without seeing Jesus. But Jesus expounded about Himself for hours. This tells us that the divine truths of Christ are concealed throughout the Old.
2) Jesus gives us the key on how we should be reading the Scriptures. We are to see the revelation of the redemption work of Christ. If we read the Bible as a law book to follow, then we would have missed what God intended for us.
3) Jesus has set the example for every minister of the Word. The challenge for the minister is really to unveil Christ through the Word to being forth faith in the hearts of the hearer.
The apostles have written down many of these revelations in the Epistles. The Epistles reveals Christ that was concealed in the Old Testament. When we read the Epistles, we get straight to the revelation of Christ. But often, I like to read the Old Testament to uncover the truths of Christ. It is very exciting; like finding nuggets of gold. Today, you also have that privilege to read with unveiled minds.
