9.10 The Holy Spirit has come to convict us of righteousness
(Romans 3:20)
Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
But when Jesus had gone to heaven to purchase our redemption, He poured out His Holy Spirit into this world to convict believers of righteousness. Jesus said that it was a good thing for Him to go to the cross so that the Helper could come to us.
(John 16:7-11)
Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
He has come to convict the world of sin for those who do not believe in Him. Through this conviction, they could come to know Him.
And to those who have put their faith in Jesus, the Spirit has come to convict them of righteousness. They are now righteous because Jesus has gone to the Father to purchase our redemption. We see Him no more because He is at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us as our High Priest.
The fact that He can indwell man is a reminder that they are perfectly righteous through the blood of Jesus. Peter said that as a result of the remission of sins, the believer can receive the Holy Spirit.
(Acts 2:38)
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
Today, the Holy Spirit lives in you to convict you of righteousness. His presence in you is the proof of your righteousness in Christ. You are no longer under conviction of sin through the law and there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.
