9.12 Empowered by the Holy Spirit in the New Covenant

Under the Old Covenant, only some people had the anointing of the Holy Spirit. They were the judges, kings, prophets, priests and artisans. The ordinary person in Israel did not have the anointing upon him.

The anointing is God’s ability placed on man through the Holy Spirit. When God called a person into an office, He would put His anointing to fulfill the role. When the anointing is upon a person, he can perform supernatural feats. For example, Samson had supernatural strength. Or when the anointing was upon King David, he could even bend a bow of bronze. He had power to battle with his enemies.

But today, under the New Covenant, every believer can receive the gift and anointing of the Holy Spirit. You and I can be empowered by the Holy Spirit. Jesus had qualified us into His promises. Jesus was introduced by John the Baptist, His forerunner as our baptizer in the Holy Spirit.

(Mark 1:7-8)
And he preached, saying, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. I indeed baptized you with water, but He will BAPTIZE you with the HOLY SPIRIT.”

This promised was finally fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, after Jesus had gone up to heaven to receive the Holy Spirit at the right hand of the Father. Everyone among the 120 in the upper room received. Not a single person was excluded.

(Acts 1:4-5, 2:1-2)
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be BAPTIZED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT not many days from now.”

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Jesus said that they would receive power (dunamis) through the baptism in the Spirit. The secret to empowerment is to be filled with the Holy Spirit – or the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

(Acts 1:8)
But you shall receive POWER when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Today, every single believer under the New Covenant can receive empowerment through the Holy Spirit. The power of the Spirit is manifested through the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit and the ministry gifts. They are for the work of ministry – the anointing breaks every yoke – and to defeat the true spiritual enemy of God. Throughout the book of Acts, the believers operated in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Today, you have the privilege.
