9.37 Experiencing the true substance of Christ – the Table of Showbread
The twelve loaves of bread signifies the twelve tribes of Israel which is in covenant relationship with God. Under the New Covenant, the bread and the wine points to the covenant meal – or the Holy Communion. We get to partake of the blood of Christ shed for us, and the body of Christ broken for us. We get to enjoy covenant relationship with God on the basis of Christ – His blood was the blood of the New Covenant & His blood was shed for the remission of our sins. His body was broken for our healing – for by His stripes we were healed.
(Matthew 26:26-28)
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is MY BODY.”
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Let us talk about the act of the priest eating the bread. The privilege is reserved only for the priest – they get to eat the bread. Today, we are all priests before God. Jesus has made us to be a royal priesthood. We get to eat the bread. Now, the bread also points to Jesus, our Bread of Life. When we as priests eat the bread, it points to us feeding on Jesus, and drawing from His divine life.
(John 6:48-51)
I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
You may ask, “How do I feed on Jesus?” Well we talked about the Holy Communion. Another practical way is to feed on Him & to draw from His life through His word. A few verses down from the passage above, Jesus said that His word is spirit and is LIFE (John 6:63). On another occasion, Jesus said that man shall not live on bread alone, but every WORD that proceeds from the mouth of God. God’s word is spiritual bread. Today, we get to feed on Jesus through the revelation of His word.
As we share these truths on the tabernacle, you are already feeding on the revelation of Christ to receive His life. The last lesson, we talked about the Spirit. Today, we talk about the Word. Christianity is about experiencing Christ through both the Spirit & the Word.
