4.17 Calling upon your covenant God

The covenant promises are all written in the Bible. How do we call upon our covenant God in order to enjoy our covenant benefits? The only requirement is faith. We are to walk by faith in His covenant promises instead of walking by sight according to circumstances (2 Cor 5:7).

Let me share the story of a little boy who was faced literally with a giant of a problem. His name is David, a shepherd boy. He went to the battlefield to bring supplies to his brothers who were soldiers. When he was there, he saw Goliath defying the armies of Israel and the whole nation of Israel. The people were paralyzed with fear. Not a single person dared to confront this giant. They were intimidated by the sight of this terrifying war machine who has killed many opponents in his lifetime.

How would we have responded if we were there? Many would have been intimidated as well. But David understood that the nation of Israel was in covenant with the living God. He knew that the uncircumcised Philistine was the enemy of God’s covenant people. He also knew that God’s covenant promised victory.

Because we had faith in God, and the covenant promises, he confronted that giant. He knew that His covenant God would not fail Him. He declared God’s victory with great boldness. He called upon His covenant God with faith. And God fought for him, and gave him a great victory.

(1 Sam 17:26, 45-47, NKJV)

For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the NAME OF THE Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day THE Lord WILL DELIVER YOU into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for THE BATTLE IS THE Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”

David changed his circumstances by calling upon his covenant God. Today, you live in a better covenant established on better promises by Christ. Do you know your covenant benefits? You too can change your circumstances by calling upon your covenant God with faith.
