4.15 The memorial tree of the New Covenant
So what is our memorial tree that would remind us of our New Covenant? It is the CROSS. When we think of the cross, we are reminded that Jesus died to cut the New Covenant on the cross. Through the cross we have been reconciled to God. We have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ and we have also been redeemed from the curse of the law.
(Gal 3:13, NKJV)
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a TREE”)…
The above verse refers to the cross as a tree. Jesus was hung on that tree.
When we look at the cross, it is not just to remember a historical event that happened 2,000 years ago. When we look at the cross, we are reminded that Jesus bore our sins, our condemnation, our curses, our death on that cross. When we look at the cross with faith, we receive salvation, righteousness, justification, blessings, and life.
(John 3:14-15, NKJV)
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
When the children of Israel were bitten by snakes in the desert, many died. Then God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and to set it on a pole. Bronze signifies judgment. On the cross, Jesus took our judgment and became sin for us.
The person who looked upon his wounds died. The person who looked at Moses died. The only way for healing and salvation was to look to the bronze serpent on the pole.
(Numbers 21:8-9, NKJV)
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
Likewise for us, the cross is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes. Today, we should not be looking at our circumstances. Instead, we should be looking to the cross to receive from Jesus our miracle by faith.
