4.5 The New Covenant cut with the blood of Jesus
Jesus came to this earth to fulfill the full requirements of the law on our behalf. He succeeded. The Bible says that He did no sin (1 Pet 2:22), He knew no sin (2 Cor 5:21) and in Him was no sin (1 John 3:5). He was perfectly righteous.
On the cross, He gave us His righteousness as a free gift. His blood was shed to wash away our sins. He paid in full the judgment of the law and took upon Himself the curses of all our failures. There was a divine exchange on the cross. He became sin that we may become righteousness (2 Cor 5:21).
The New Covenant was cut between God the Father and our Lord Jesus, who represented the whole world. The blood of Jesus was shed to institute the New Covenant. It is far more precious than the blood of bulls and goats used to cut the Old Covenant.
(Matt 26:28, NKJV)
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is MY BLOOD of the NEW COVENANT, which is shed for many for the REMISSION OF SINS.
Jesus straddled between the two covenants – the Old and the New. He came to bring an end to the Old Covenant by fulfilling it and He replaced with the New Covenant, which was cut on the cross (Rom 7:4, 10:4; Gal 3:24-25; Heb 8:13, 9:16-17).
Today, we are in covenant with God through Christ. We are beneficiaries of the New Covenant because we are in Christ and Christ is in us. Our covenant relationship with God is based on the finished work of Jesus. It has nothing to do with our performance. Therefore, it is secure and cannot fail. The only requirement is to believe in Jesus and all that He has accomplished for us.
