8.71 Works of faith – walking as God’s children

When we received Christ, we were baptized into Christ. Our new identity is found in Christ. As Christ is the Son of God, we have all become sons of God through Christ.

(Galatians 3:26-27)
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

When it comes to relationship with God, we are not servants, but we are sons. Unfortunately, many Christians still see themselves only as servants of God. There is a difference between a servant and a son. A son is an heir while a servant is not. God sent his Holy Spirit into our hearts to tell us that we are sons of God who can call Him “Abba Father” or “Daddy” or “Papa”.

(Galatians 4:6-7)
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

When the prodigal son came back to his father, he wanted to tell his father to treat him as one of the father’s hired servants (Luke 15:19). But the father did not allow him to complete his rehearsed speech. The father said, “This is my son…” Today God doesn’t want to treat us as his hired servants. He calls us His sons.

Though we are sons, we have the privilege to serve in our Father’s kingdom. So when it comes to business, we are His servants, but when it comes to personal relationship, we are His sons and daughters. In a family, personal relationship always comes before business. If we know we are sons of God, we will enjoy an intimate relationship with our Father. Those who see themselves as just servants of God (instead of sons) will not enjoy that same intimacy.

God has poured out the Spirit of His Son Jesus into our hearts that we may call Him “Abba Father” or “Daddy God”. This is the spirit of son-ship in the New Covenant. That beautiful expression speaks of closeness and intimacy. What a privilege we have in the New Covenant as sons and daughters of God.

When you see God as your Father, you are walking in faith. When you open your mouth to call him “Daddy” or “Papa”, that action is your works of faith. This faith will energize your relationship with God. It will bring about intimacy. It will enable you to be led by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:14-16). It will enable you to come to the Father to receive help in times of need.
