8.49 The promises of the Old Covenant are all fulfilled in Christ!

We showed earlier that under the law, the promises of righteousness, holiness and blessings are CONDITIONAL. Let me give you CORRESPONDING verses from the New Covenant to prove that these promises are now UNCONDITIONAL because they are given “in Christ” based on His finished work.

1) 2 Cor 5:21 tells us that we have become the righteousness of God “in Christ” [past tense]. The dream of Israel in Deut 6:25 is our reality in Christ.

(2 Cor 5:21)
For He MADE Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might BECOME the righteousness of God IN HIM.

2) The promise of being a holy nation and a kingdom of priests is a reality based on His finished work. The dream of Israel in Ex 19:5-6 is our reality in Christ.

(1 Pet 2:9)
But YOU ARE a chosen generation, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a HOLY NATION, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light…

3) The promise of blessings and redemption from curses are a reality in Christ. The dream of Israel in Deut 28 is our reality in Christ.

(2 Cor 1:20)
For all the PROMISES OF GOD IN HIM [Christ] are YES, and in Him AMEN, to the glory of God through us.

(Gal 3:13)
Christ HAS REDEEMED US from the CURSE OF THE LAW, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”)…

What a sharp contrast! Isn’t it so wonderful that we are in the New Covenant established on better promises? Some people still read the Bible without dividing between Old and New Covenant. They still live on the basis that everything is conditional.

But if we read the Epistles of the New Covenant, we will find many verses that show forth how the verses in the Old Covenant are now fulfilled in Christ. The Epistles, written after the cross, help to build our faith upon that higher revelation. Therefore, we should divide the word carefully be reading the Bible through the perspective of His finished work.
