8.39 God is our Abba Father in the New Covenant

When we were under law, we were under bondage to fear of judgment. However, under the New Covenant of grace, we have been liberated from fear. There is no fear in love. Perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. There is no fear of judgment for the believer. As long as we still have fear, we have not been made perfect in God’s love. As long as we fear, we still have doubts over His love that was poured out on the cross.

(1 John 4:17-18)
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of JUDGMENT; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is NO FEAR IN LOVE; but PERFECT LOVE CASTS OUT FEAR, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

We have been given the spirit of adoption as sons. God is our Father. We are no longer a slave but a son. Today, we are to call God, “Daddy” or “Papa”. When we do so, we will walk intimately with God in the father-son relationship that He desires. When we experience sonship, we also experience our inheritance as an heir of God.

(Rom 8:15)
For you did not receive the spirit of BONDAGE again to FEAR, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “ABBA, FATHER.”

(Gal 4:6-7)
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a SLAVE but a SON, and if a son, then an HEIR of God through Christ.

God is love. In addition to having experienced God’s love, we have also received Him into our hearts. God lives in us through His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the source of God’s love in us. Rom 5:5 says that the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

(Rom 5:5)
Now hope does not disappoint, because the LOVE OF GOD has been poured out in our hearts BY THE HOLY SPIRIT who was given to us.

Today, we can also say that Love lives in us and we are the living and walking bearers of His love. We don’t love with our own ability. It is His love that flows in us and through us. The New Covenant is the revelation of God’s love. We can call Him Abba Father with great affection.
