8.31 No longer “Poor Sinners” in Christ
We were indeed once poor sinners without Christ. That was why Jesus came to redeem us. The Bible describes us as sinners in the past tense. But we have now been justified (made righteous) by His blood. We are no longer poor sinners according to His Word – unless if we do not belief that His blood succeeded in redeeming us.
(Romans 5:8-9)
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we WERE STILL SINNERS, Christ died for us. Much more then, HAVING NOW BEEN JUSTIFIED BY HIS BLOOD, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
That old man (the poor sinner) died with Christ, and we were resurrected with Christ with His incorruptible seed – as a new creation. This new man is in the image and likeness of Christ – no longer in the image of Adam. So from that moment of redemption, we were no longer poor sinners.
Let us address that phrase “POOR SINNERS”. First of all, are we POOR in Christ? On the contrary, the Bible says that we are RICH in Christ through His grace.
(2 Cor 8:9)
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty MIGHT BECOME RICH.
In fact, the Bible says that as children of God, we are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16). This means that all that belongs to God is our inheritance. So great is our salvation that it is mind boggling.
Next are we SINNERS in Christ? Throughout the epistles, believers are now addressed as saints in Christ. We are not saints in ourselves but in Christ. It is because of His blood that sanctified us. Today, we live in His identity. God sees us as saints in Christ - only by His grace.
(1 Cor 1:2)
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are SANCTIFIED IN CHRIST Jesus, CALLED TO BE SAINTS, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.
Brethren, let us be firmly established in the New Covenant so that we can boast in the perfect redeeming power of His blood. Let us give glory and worship to God for this great salvation that we have. Our boast is in our Savior alone.
