6.30 You are a royal priesthood – called to make intercession

You are a royal priesthood. In the last lesson, we shared about how the Holy Spirit brings forth worship from our hearts for we are the real temple of God.

The Holy Spirit is in us not only to for worship but also for intercession. Today, we will share about how the Holy Spirit also brings forth prayers of intercession from our hearts.

In the Old Testament, the physical temple is also called a house of prayer for all nations (Mark 11:17). Today, we are the real temple of the Holy Spirit. We are the living and walking house of prayer. Not only do we pray in our known language, but the Spirit who lives in us makes intercession through us in the language that He gives (Rom 8:26-27).

(Romans 8:26-27)
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself MAKES INTERCESSION for us with GROANINGS which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He MAKES INTERCESSION for the saints according to the will of God.

Note that He makes intercession within us and through us – the temple of God. This could be in groanings which cannot be uttered in the known language. It could also be through different tongues. If we were to pray only with our human understanding and ability, we would certainly be limited by our finite minds; but the Holy Spirit knows the perfect will of God. That is why he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

When we depend and flow with the Holy Spirit, prayer just flows out naturally from our hearts. This explains why Paul could be in a constant state of prayer (1 Cor 14:18). He was constantly praying for all the churches that He planted in His missionary journeys.

Sometimes, I start praying in the spirit subconsciously and the image of my family members flash across my mind. I instantly know that the Holy Spirit is making intercession for them in my living house of prayer through my vocal cords.

At other times, my heart could be troubled. When I do not know what to do or how to pray, I would simply depend on the Holy Spirit to make intercession for me in God’s perfect will through His language.

What a privilege we have to be priests of God. The Holy Spirit lives in us to bring forth worship and intercession. The Old Testament saints never had this privilege because they never had the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Life is exciting for us as New Covenant priests.
