6.17 You have an inheritance in Christ
In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will…
Yesterday, we said that there is a difference between a son and a servant. The nature of the relationship is different. The son is part of the family while the servant is not. The son is an insider while a servant is an outsider. The son enjoys the love of the Father but a servant does not. The son receives grace from the Father while the servant has to labor for his wages. That is why it makes a difference in the way we see ourselves in our relationship with God – as sons or servants? A son can serve the Father but a servant can never be a son.
One of the privileges of a son is that he is an heir to the Father’s possessions. All that the Father has belongs to all His children. It does not belong to his servants or his slaves.
(Galatians 4:7)
Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an HEIR OF GOD through Christ.
As sons, we are heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.
(Romans 8:16-17)
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—HEIRS OF GOD and JOINT HEIRS WITH CHRIST...
Today, a lot of Christians are not enjoying their inheritance in Christ because they do not see themselves as sons of God. Many still see themselves only as servants of God. Why is this so?
Under the Old Covenant, the sons of God were not revealed. They were more like servants under the law. For 1,500 years, they had to labor for, and earn their acceptance and their blessings – under the system of law. When they failed, they came under the curses. They experienced fear. That is why Romans 8:15 says, “For you did not receive the spirit of BONDAGE again to FEAR, but you have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out ‘Abba Father’.” They were under a yoke of bondage. Gal 5:1-4 tells us that this yoke of bondage is the system of law.
We are no longer under the Old Covenant but the New. Today, we are in Christ. We are sons of God and we have an inheritance in Christ. Paul did not pray for the Ephesians to receive something from God. He prayed that they may KNOW the riches of the glory of God’s inheritance in the saints (Eph 1:17-18). Our inheritance is a reality. The problem is in not “KNOWING” it. The more you see yourself as a child of God, the more you will be conscious of your inheritance. You will then grow in faith to walk in the blessings of your inheritance.
