6.16 You are sons and daughters of God through Christ
(Romans 8:19, 21)
For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the REVEALING OF THE SONS OF GOD…because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the CHILDREN OF GOD.
This happened after Jesus went to the cross and made us sons of God through our baptism into Him. When we received Christ, we were baptized into Christ.
(Galatians 3:26-27)
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
As Christ is the Son of God, we have all become sons of God through Christ. When it comes to relationship with God, we are not servants, but we are sons. Unfortunately, many Christians still see themselves only as servants of God. There is a difference between a servant and a son.
(Gal 4:6-7)
And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
When the prodigal son came back to his father, he wanted to tell his father to treat him as one of the father’s hired servants (Luke 15:19). But the father did not allow him to complete his rehearsed speech. The father said, “This is my son…” Today God doesn’t want to treat us as his hired servants. He calls us His sons.
Though we are sons, we have the privilege to serve in our Father’s kingdom. So when it comes to business, we are His servants, but when it comes to personal relationship, we are His sons and daughters. In a family, personal relationship always comes before business. If we know we are sons of God, we will enjoy an intimate relationship with our Father. Those who see themselves as just servants of God (instead of sons) will not enjoy that same intimacy.
God has poured out the Spirit of His Son Jesus into our hearts that we may call Him “Abba Father” or “Daddy God”. This is the spirit of son-ship in the New Covenant. That beautiful expression speaks of closeness and intimacy. What a privilege we have in the New Covenant as sons and daughters of God.
