5.6 Jesus revealed in the four Gospels

Today, we continue on the series entitled, “The central theme of God’s Word.” We have shown earlier that the whole Bible points to Jesus and His redemption work for us. It is summarized by the verse John 3:16.

We have also given numerous examples on how Jesus is hidden in all the stories of the Old Testament. Many of our friends expressed amazement over the fact that the Old Testament and New Testament were so closely linked. It has been expressed that the Old is New concealed, and the New is the Old reveled.

Today, we leave the Old Testament behind, as we journey ahead into the four gospels. New sceneries and insights begin to unfold. The Old Testament pointed to the coming of the Messiah. Finally in the Gospels, Jesus is born. He fulfills His calling to die for all mankind. He is resurrected and He ascends to heaven.

The question is, “Why are there four Gospels?” Why not just one Gospel book? Are the four Gospels inspired of God, or are there other Gospels like the Gnostic Gospels, the Gospel of Judas, etc? Let us see what the Bible reveals about the four Gospels.

God gave four Gospels to reveal the four facets of Jesus with great clarity. When you look at a beautiful diamond, you scrutinize it from all angles and see its beauty from different perspectives.

The Bible in Ezek 1:10 and Rev 4:7 speaks of four living creatures with four faces around the throne of God in heaven. The four faces were the faces of the lion, ox, man and eagle. These four faces reveal the different aspects of Jesus.

(Ezekiel 1:10, NKJV)
As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a MAN; each of the four had the face of a LION on the right side, each of the four had the face of an OX on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an EAGLE.

The Gospel of Matthew reveals Jesus as the “King of the Jews”, typified by the face of the Lion. The Gospel of Mark reveals Jesus as the “Suffering Servant”, typified by the face of the Ox. The Gospel of Luke reveals Jesus as the “Perfect Man”, typified by the face of the Man, and the Gospel of John reveals Jesus as the “Divine Son of God”, typified by the face of the Eagle.

God has confirmed that there are only four inspired Gospels. The different emphasis of the four Gospels brings out the beauty and perfection of Jesus.
