5.2 The Old Testament points to Jesus

Christ is the central theme of the Old Testament where He is hidden in type. Therefore, we need to unlock the type, in order to see Jesus in all the Old Testament rituals and stories. In short, Jesus is concealed in the Old Testament and He is revealed in the New Testament.

Jesus Himself declared that the Old Testament Scriptures testified of Him. He said to the Pharisees in John 5:39, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which TESTIFY OF ME.” The only Scriptures available when Jesus walked on this earth were the Old Testament books.

Therefore, when we read the whole of the Old Testament, we must hear it testify of Jesus to us. That was how Jesus expected the Jews to read the Old Testament. Today, we have the Holy Spirit to reveal these truths to us. In addition, many parts of the New Testament actually reveal Christ in the Old Testament. Therefore, Jesus is the key to help us understand the Old Testament. If you read it without the key of Jesus, you will miss the central theme or central Person of the Bible just like the Pharisees did.

When Jesus was resurrected from the dead, He appeared on the road to Emmaus to two disciples who did not recognize Him. They were saddened by His death, as they had not understood the plan of God.

Jesus said to them in Luke 24:25-27, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in ALL THE SCRIPTURES the things concerning HIMSELF.” That must have been quite a session!

Would you like to read in all the Old Testament Scripture the things concerning Jesus? Would you like to have heard Jesus expounding on the Old Testament about the redemption plan? Today, the Holy Spirit can reveal to us the same revelations that Jesus shared with the two disciples.
