2.23 The importance of being led by the Spirit
We must realize that there are limitations in our human ability. We do not know the future. We do not have all the available information for decision making. We do not know what dangers lay ahead. We may not have full control of the macro forces that affect us.
We must also realize that the Holy Spirit is omniscient. He knows everything. He even knows the future. And best of all, He is with us to help us. Therefore, it makes good sense to consult Him, and to hear what He has to say. He may confirm if our decision is correct, or He may show us a better way. He has our best interest at heart.
In the Old Testament, the pillar of fire and the pillar of cloud led Israel to the promised land. It protected them from the heat of the day and the cold of the night. It also protected them from Pharaoh’s chariots that were in hot pursuit. Today, the Holy Spirit leads us to experience our land of milk and honey in Christ. When we walk with Him, we will also be under His protection. When we do not follow His leading, we walk out of His blessings and protection.
There was an occasion where Joshua and his people neglected to seek counsel of Lord and he was deceived into making a covenant with the Gibeonites, whom they were supposed to destroy (Joshua 9:14, 22). They depended on their natural observations for their decision (Joshua 9:12-13). They regretted their decision but it was too late. This story is a lesson to us. We are to seek counsel from the Lord by being led by the Spirit.
During the time of King David, he always inquired of God via two precious stones - Urim and Thummim. Whenever he consulted God, His victory was guaranteed. The interesting thing is that no two battles were fought the same way. David couldn’t use the last strategy for the current battle. Today, the Holy Spirit leads us to reign in life over circumstances and to fulfill our purpose in Christ. There is no fixed formula. We have to be led by the Spirit at all times, especially in major decisions of life.
