5.11 The 4 Gospels hidden in type in the Old Testament
When God cut the Old Covenant with Israel, He gave specific instructions for the building of a tabernacle. This tabernacle would take central place among the people. They Ark of the Covenant will go before them in their journey, and they would encamp around the tabernacle when they settled. The tabernacle was at the heart of their camp.
The tabernacle contains furnishings – the 1) Brazen Altar, 2) Brazen Laver, 3) Golden Candlestand, 4) Table of Showbread, 5) Altar of Incense, 6) Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy seat. All these furnishings represent Jesus who dwelled (tabernacled) among us.
Furthermore, if you look at the layout of the furnishings from above, you will see the shape of the cross. This means that the redemption work of Jesus on the cross is to take centre place in our hearts. Today, we are the living temple of God where His Spirit dwells (1 Cor 3:16).
In Numbers chapter 2, the twelve tribes were allocated their specific camping space around the tabernacle, beside the standard (flag) of their tribe. On the east side of the tabernacle, Judah shall camp (2:3). Judah’s flag had the picture of the Lion. On the West side was Epharaim, whose flag had the picture of an Ox (2:18). On the South was Reuben, whose flag had the picture of a Man (2:10). On the North was Dan, whose flag had the picture of an Eagle (2:25). The four sides of the tabernacle were flanked by the flags of the Lion, Ox, Man and Eagle.
Remember that Jesus is our King who came as our Suffering Servant to redeem us. He is the Son of God who represents God to man, yet He is also the Son of Man who represents man to God. We can put our faith in Him as our Redeemer. Jesus is to take the central place in our hearts and our lives are to revolve around His finished work on the cross.
