5.9 Jesus as revealed in the Gospel of Luke

Jesus is typified by the face of the Man in the book of Luke. He was fully God, yet he came to this earth fully man. He was a Perfect Man for He was without sin.

(Phil 2:5-8, NKJV)
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and COMING IN THE LIKENESS OF MEN. And being found in appearance AS A MAN, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Why did Jesus have to come as a man? You see, Jesus had to be one of us in order to redeem us. In the story of Ruth, she was redeemed by Boaz, a close relative (Ruth 4). Only a close relative can redeem a person. The story of Boaz and Ruth is the story of Jesus and the Church in type. Likewise, Jesus had to come as a man just like us, born of woman to redeem us by dying on the cross (Gal 4:4).

(Rom 5:18-19, NKJV)
Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

Sin came as a result of one man – Adam. Redemption from sin into righteousness came as the result of the Man Jesus.

The Bible also says that Jesus is our High Priest who can identify perfectly with us because He was one of us. He suffered and was tempted just like us (Heb 2:17-18).

The Gospel of Luke is the only Gospel that traces the natural lineage of Jesus the Perfect Man back to Adam (Luke 3:23-38). Adam was the natural father of this man Jesus. It is also the book that reveals Jesus as a man of prayer (3:21, 5:16, 6:12, 9:18, 9:28, 11:1, 22:32, 22:44); a man who had to depend on God through prayer (Heb 5:7). When He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane, only the Gospel of Luke recorded that His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. It showed Jesus as a man.

Today, when we read the Gospel of Luke, we must know that Jesus came as us to redeem us. He didn’t press a button from heaven or send an angel. He came as us to identify with us. He understands us, He understands what we are going through and He makes intercession for us as our perfect High Priest. His Spirit lives in us to help us in our weaknesses (Rom 8:26). Don’t you find Him so wonderful?
