8.56 Faith is personified by Jesus in the New Covenant
Let me explain. Hebrew chapter 11 is a famous chapter that tells us about the great men of faith. All of them had faith in God. But then the chapter ends by saying that though they obtained a good testimony through faith, they did not receive the promise. God has something better for us in the New Covenant.
(Heb 11:39-40)
And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
What is this something better that we have? It is the finished work of Jesus. Today, we experience a different kind of faith – saving faith that they did not experience. We also experience the faith of God through Jesus – who became the author and finisher of our faith. This faith started when Jesus died and was resurrected. This is faith in the New Covenant through Jesus’ finished work.
(Heb 12:2)
…looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The book of Galatians talks about this saving faith through Jesus. In fact, it describes faith as a Person – Jesus himself. Therefore in the New Covenant, faith is a Person – faith is Jesus.
(Gal 3:23-25)
But before faith [Jesus] came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith [New Covenant faith] which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith [Jesus] had come, we are no longer under a tutor.
What a powerful verse! Meditate on that verse and let it just sink deep into our being. Today, faith lives in us through the Person of Jesus. He is our faith. Faith started when He came to live here. He is the author of our faith. He will work in us to cause faith to fulfill its purpose. He is the finisher of faith. We don’t have to struggle to have faith. We just need to rest in His faith. We can let His faith carry us through.
