8.3 Why did God find fault with the Old Covenant?
The Old Covenant revolved around the law given on Mt Sinai. The basis of relationship with God is the law. The Old Covenant is about MAN’S PERFORMANCE to keep the law perfectly in order to earn his righteousness and blessings.
(Deuteronomy 6:25)
Then it will be RIGHTEOUSNESS for us, if WE ARE CAREFUL TO OBSERVE ALL these commandments before the Lord our God, as He has commanded us.
The law of God is perfect and unbending. Anyone who breaks it is a sinner. It doesn’t matter if you break it by a little or a lot. Therefore the success of the Old Covenant of law hinges on man’s ability to keep the law.
If this covenant depends on man’s ability to keep it, do you think that Israel will succeed? Can sinful man keep the righteous laws of God? Can imperfect people keep the perfect law of God? What would your guess be? The Bible is so intuitive that even the simplest person can understand it. Let us see the verdict of the law:
(Romans 3:19 – 20)
Now we know that whatever the LAW SAYS, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become GUILTY BEFORE GOD. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the LAW IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN.
God found fault with the law because the perfect law failed to justify anyone. God’s heart was with mankind. The Old Covenant gave the verdict on mankind - "GUILTY". God had to send Jesus to cut the New Covenant to redeem mankind.
(Hebrews 8:7-9)
For if that first covenant had been FAULTLESS, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a NEW COVENANT with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT, and I disregarded them, says the Lord.
The New Covenant would provide the real solution to address the verdict given on Israel by the Old Covenant. Tomorrow, we shall see why the New Covenant cannot fail – because it is not dependent on man’s performance.
