8.2 Was the Old Covenant superseded by the New Covenant?

The Bible calls us “ministers of the New Covenant”. As ministers of the New Covenant, we minister by the power of the Holy Spirit to produce life. We no longer minister by the letter (the Old Covenant) to produce death.

(2 Cor 3:6)
…but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as MINISTERS OF THE NEW COVENANT, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

One day, I had lunch with a friend who was an established Christian leader. He said that he believed that Christians are under both covenants – and that both covenants were applicable. I realized that I used to think that way too.

But Jesus came to establish the New Covenant on the cross. Let us hear what He said during the last supper. He described His blood as the blood of the New Covenant to be shed on the cross for us – for the remission of sins.

(Matt 26:27-28)
Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

The following verses will help us establish the truth that the New Covenant has replaced the Old Covenant. Israel was under the Old Covenant established at Mt Sinai, which is called Judaism. Christians are under the New Covenant established on the cross, called Christianity.

(Hebrews 8:6-8, 13)
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant…

In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete.

The New Covenant is established on better promises. We have a better mediator. The Old Covenant was faulty. So God made a New Covenant. The Old became obsolete. The New replaced the old. This means that we are under the New Covenant established on better promises. It is important to live on the basis of the New Covenant so as to enjoy the better promises.
