9.49 Prayer is giving thanks for all that has been given

Yesterday, we said that prayer is about RECEIVING rather than begging because we have already been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Something else happened to our prayer life when we begin to understand all that Christ has done for us. The focus is no longer in asking, but in GIVING THANKS for what has been given already.

Therefore, it is no surprise that under the New Covenant, there is a strong emphasis on giving thanks. This is a significant change that comes after the cross. It is the result of the cross.

Let us share some of these verses. Paul says that in everything give thanks. Whatever the circumstances, it does not change the fact that we have been blessed through Christ. When we give thanks to God, we position ourselves to receive the manifestation of the blessings.

(1 Thess 5:16-18)
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Another verse tells us to give thanks for we are partakers of the inheritance of the saints. We are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. We have an inheritance of all God’s blessings. This is because Jesus has redeemed us through His blood.

(Col 1:12-14)
…GIVING THANKS to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the INHERITANCE of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

What should the Christian life be like? We should be filled with the Spirit, singing everyday, making melody in your heart, and giving thanks for all things to God.

(Eph 5:18-20)
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ...

What a life to live! You too can experience thanksgiving as a significant part of your prayer life. It’s a different attitude to life.
