7.7 Experiencing the leading of the Holy Spirit

When the Holy Spirit comes to abide in us, He will also lead us from within. The Holy Spirit is omniscient. This means that He knows everything. Is it good to go through all the challenges in life with the help of the Person who has all the answers? He knows how to lead us out of our problems and into the land of milk and honey.

Have you been in a situation where you have tried everything but there seems no way out of the problem. What we need is to stop trying in our own efforts and to start listening to the Holy Spirit for His answers.

In the Old Testament, Israel was led by the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. They were led from the desert to the promised-land. They never experienced the leading of God from within. We have that privilege. Why is that so?

When we received Jesus, we received the gift of righteousness and we became sons of God. The Holy Spirit came to indwell us and to lead us. The promise for us as sons of God is that we will experience being led by the Spirit. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

In the Old Testament, God wrote His laws on physical stones. The stones were cold and lifeless. But in the New Covenant, God writes His laws in our hearts. We no longer live life trying to follow the law written on stones because we can live by the leading of the Spirit inside us. God doesn’t want you to try to keep His laws externally; He wants His Spirit to transform you from within.

(Hebrews 8:10)
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Gal 5:18 says, “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Following the law written on stones is opposed to following the law of the Spirit in our hearts. To be led by the Spirit, we have to cease striving to follow the law written on stones. Rom 7:6 contrasts following the written code of the law with following the promptings of the Spirit.

(Romans 7:6, Amplified Bible)
But now we are discharged from the Law and having terminated all intercourse with it, having died to what once restrained us and held us captive. So now we serve not under [obedience to] the old code of written regulations, but [under obedience to the promptings] of the Spirit in newness [of life].

This is how we should be living in the New Covenant – in obedience to the promptings of the Spirit. When we start experiencing His leading, our relationship with God comes alive. We will start to experience the land of milk and honey in Christ.
