7.5 The salvation measure of the Holy Spirit

Though the Holy Spirit is a Person, He is omnipresent and He lives in all believers at the same time. The degree of His presence in our lives can also be measured. This is called the anointing. For example, Elisha had a double portion of Elijah’s anointing and Jesus had the Spirit without measure (2 Kin 2:9; John 3:34).

When we were first born again, we received the Holy Spirit into our spirits. This is known as the salvation measure of the Holy Spirit that every believer receives. When Peter preached his first sermon, he said to the people, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The gift of the Holy Spirit is given at the point when we received Jesus.

God gives us His spirit and seals us with His spirit as a guarantee that we belong to Him (2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13). Again, the following verse says that we were sealed with the Holy Spirit when we believed.

(Ephesians 1:13)
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, HAVING BELIEVED, you were SEALED with the Holy Spirit of promise…

The salvation measure of the Holy Spirit is also called the anointing within. This anointing is for personal consumption.

(2 Cor 1:21-22)
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has ANOINTED US is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit IN OUR HEARTS as a guarantee.

(1 John 2:27)
But the ANOINTING which you have received from Him ABIDES IN YOU…

The Bible often uses water to illustrate this measurable attribute. The salvation measure is like a fountain of water within us springing up into everlasting life (John 4:13-14). Jesus was speaking in the context of a well of water. In Israel, it is common for a rich person to own a well for his personal consumption.

There are privileges of having the Holy Spirit indwell us. You can drink from this living water. He brings about new experiences when we are conscious of His presence. Today, it is important to know that He lives in you and you can be conscious of Him just as the disciples were – in the book of Acts.
