6.5 There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
(Romans 8:1, New American Bible)
Hence, now there is NO CONDEMNATION for those who are IN CHRIST Jesus.
In the original Greek, the above verse ends without further conditions. I have quoted a version that reflects the verse more accurately. The reason that we are no longer under condemnation is because we are in Christ Jesus. He is the only reason.
Let us move down to the end of the chapter. It tells us that now God is on our side and no one else can be against us. Because of Jesus’ redemption work, we are now God’s elect. If God has justified us, then who is he who condemns? Jesus is risen to the right hand of God to intercede for us. When God sees His nail-pierced hands, God declares that we have been justified by Jesus.
(Romans 8:31-34)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is GOD WHO JUSTIFIES. WHO IS HE WHO CONDEMNS? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the RIGHT HAND OF GOD, who also makes INTERCESSION FOR US.
Well, what if we fall in our journey? Shouldn’t we be condemned in our future sins? If a Christian should stand condemned by his future sins, then no one would qualify for heaven. No one could maintain his salvation because the perfect man does not exist. God knows us and He knows that we are not perfect. If we were, why would we need an intercessor at the right hand of God? Thank God that even if we should fall, Jesus upholds our righteousness and we are still IN CHRIST. His grace helps us to get back on our feet again and to continue walking in Him. Over time, His grace empowers us to change from within as long as we do not allow condemnation to drive us away from Him.
Today, God has justified us but our own conscience may still be condemning ourselves. Or we may be entertaining the condemning voice of the accuser because we do not realize that Jesus has borne our condemnation. And this sense of condemnation can harm us spiritually, mentally and even physically. It can kill us. We need to be freed from all condemnation by seeing Jesus who took our place in order to acquit us. This freedom, which is based on the finished work of Christ, allows us to run to Him with gratitude and to walk intimately with Him. Today, we are in Him and there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are IN CHRIST.
