8.20 Jesus fulfilled the law perfectly, and became the perfect lamb who took away the sin of the world
1) He committed no sin (1 Pet 2:22)
2) In Him there is no sin (1 John 3:5)
3) He knew no sin (2 Cor 5:21)
In the Old Covenant, the sacrificial lamb has to be without blemish. Jesus the perfect Son of God qualified to be our sacrificial Lamb.
On the cross, Jesus paid for our sins perfectly. While the blood of animals could only cover the sins of Israel for a year, the blood of Jesus had the power to wash away the sins of mankind for eternity. While the human priests could never sit down because the work was not completed, Jesus sat down after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever. Through it, He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
(Heb 10:11-14)
And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOREVER, SAT DOWN at the right hand of God… For by one offering He has PERFECTED forever those who are being sanctified.
Today, our past, present and future sins have been carried upon Jesus for eternity. Heb 9:12 says that Jesus has obtained eternal redemption for us with His own blood. We are blessed to be under the New Covenant. King David spoke prophetically about this covenant when he declared:-
(Rom 4:7-8)
“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
And whose sins are covered;
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall NOT IMPUTE SIN.”
This is how Jesus redeemed us. Our lawless deeds have been forgiven. All our sins are imputed on Him instead of us. David lived under the Old Covenant but saw into the future. He describes us as blessed, as we live in the New Covenant purchased by Jesus.
Even when we should fall into sin, we will never fall out of our righteousness or salvation in Christ, for all our sins have been imputed to Christ on the cross. His grace is greater than sin. Rom 5:20 says, “But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more.” Thank God for His grace because if our future sins were not covered, we would never be certain of our salvation, and there would be no lasting peace with God.
