8.14 The prophets enquired and prophesied of the grace that would come to you

Moses told the people that Jesus would come after him. In fact, the law and the prophets in the Old Testament all prophesied about the Savior who would come. They all knew that it would be different when Jesus came.

The prophets did not have the full picture. So the prophets inquired and searched carefully about Jesus in the Scriptures. The prophets prophesied about the grace (Jesus) that would come to you. The Holy Spirit through the prophets testified of Christ who would die on the cross – so that His grace may flow freely.

(1 Peter 1:10-12)
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the GRACE THAT WOULD COME TO YOU, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.

So that was what they looked for in anticipation – for the grace that would come – for Jesus that would come – for the New Covenant that would be established through the cross.

Such was the anticipation that the prophet Simeon wanted to see the Christ before his death (Luke 2). He wanted to have a glimpse of the grace that would come to us. When he saw Jesus he said, “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation”

Even in the gospels, the early believers searched for Jesus – whom the law and prophets spoke about. And they found him.

(John 1:45)
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

The prophets of old lived before the cross. They looked forward to the grace that would come to us. Today, we live after the cross. We live in the New Covenant that has now been established. We have the Grace who came to us. They looked forward to the glories that would follow after the cross. We live in that glorious time – the dispensation of grace (Eph 3:2). We are privileged. We are on a journey to discover how privileged we are to have His grace.
